Sunday, 22 June 2008 22:59Umm ...
I appear to have put down a deposit for a new bellydance costume.
That costs £300 ...
Which wouldn't be so bad (ok, it would still be pretty bad for my finances) if I hadn't already written cheques totalling £825 in the last week for the next instalment of my Arabic Dance teacher training diploma. Meep!
It is a gorgeous costume though. Made by Istanbul Dreams, shiny red fabric, with hand-sewn three-dimensional red and black bead poppies and green bead leaves on the bra and around the hips; big slit up the thigh of the skirt, again hand-beaded around the edge; matching gauntlets and choker with another beaded poppy, and little strands of tiny beads dotted around the skirt. And a Cleavage of Doom that's even more impressive than my last costume *g*.
Apparently 'no-one else will have one like that' - whether that's just meaning that there aren't any like that imported into this area, or whether it really is a unique creation, I'm not sure. (The latter isn't beyond the bounds of possibility - loads of the more basic costumes are churned out in bulk, even with the hand-beading/hand-sewn sequins, but the more high-end costumes can be one-offs.)
Poppies are my favourite flower. I was doomed as soon as I tried it on. *sigh*
Ah well, I have six months to pay off the other £250 of it. (And I bought a pink and silver galabeya and silver crochet and coin hip belt in the meantime, but they only came to £54, so that's alright then *g*).
I finished teaching my classes until September last week, so I thought I might be taking it a little easier for the next few months. Well, as it turns out I seem to be filling in the time with more dance-related stuff - this weekend I've spent 25 hours doing dance-teaching training related stuff, tomorrow night I have a meeting to make arrangements for a performance, Tuesday night I'm going to my own teacher's class, Wednesday night I'm trying out another teacher's class as she teaches Modern Egyptian which is a style I need to brush up on for my training course, Friday lunchtime I'm doing a performance and Friday night a rehearsal. And today I was asked if I wanted to perform a solo at a Hallowe'en hafla in October - I'm getting booked up!
Hello, my name is Alison and I'm a bellydance addict.

Date: Sunday, 22 June 2008 22:56 (UTC)Pity most of those bookings are unpaid - most are at events run by other bellydancers, so you're only performing for the fun of it, and the fee for the one on Friday will go into our troupe's funds to subsidise paying for musicians for our next workshops. Any chance to perform though :)

Date: Sunday, 22 June 2008 23:19 (UTC)I love bellydance - unfortunately the income I make from it probably doesn't anywhere near cover what I spend on it (especially this year with the diploma course I'm paying for), but at least I can subsidise it a wee bit. And I am getting the occasional paid gig. I could probably get some more if I went out and looked for them, but it's just finding the time, y'know?

The bellydance teacher course I was on this weekend had women of every shape from stick insect to opulent curves and everything in between, and they were fabulous dancers. (Not even the woman bit is compulsory, lol!)
Give it a go. There's bound to be a bellydance teacher somewhere near you, they get everywhere.
