Tonight there was a screening, for one night only, in a few selected cinemas around the country, of a film of one of Rush's concerts. The husband has always been a huge Rush fan, so he was pretty excited about it when it was announced, and haunted the booking site until he got hold of a couple of tickets (the Leicester Square showing sold out in about 9 minutes).

It was a 15 certificate, so I offered to stay at home with our younger daughter, and he was going to take our 15-year-old daughter along with him (he has hope of passing on at least some of his musical taste to her!).

They set off to the cinema and F and I settled down for a quiet girly evening together, only to get a phone call from C.

The person in the box office wouldn't let them in.

He (or she) refused to believe that C was 15 and wouldn't let her in, DESPITE THE FACT THAT SHE WAS THERE WITH HER FATHER, and presumably believed that he was lying through his teeth when he told them she was indeed 15. So they had to turn round and come home again, clutching their tub of popcorn and drinks.

Alan must be gutted, although he's putting a cheerful face on it. It never even occurred to us that they'd want proof of her age when she was going with her dad. Fair enough, if she'd turned up with a bunch of friends and tried to get in, I could see that they might want proof that she was old enough (since she's on the short side for her age), but you'd think that since she'd turned up with an obviously responsible adult that they would take him at his word.

By the time they got home I'd looked out her passport, but we're a good 40 minutes away from the cinema and Alan said it wouldn't be worth it by the time they got back. So he's had to miss his one and only opportunity to see it on the big screen. I'm so disappointed for him.

At least we had quite a nice family evening in front of the telly (with the popcorn) watching part 1 of Terry Pratchett's 'Going Postal', and the Rush dvd will be out in a month or two, but it's not how we planned the evening.

How young must your husband look that they wouldn't even let her in with him? That's just bloody ridiculous! I'd be calling some folks at the theater and making a huge stink. Reimbursement for the tickets is the least I'd settle for!

Lol, he'd bless you for saying so, but he very definitely looks old enough to be her dad - he's in his mid-forties and has been going bald for the last 20 years, so there's no way they wouldn't have guessed he was her father.

They did get a refund, but I've been mentally drafting a letter since yesterday demanding a written apology at least.

and yet pubs and clubs will let blatantly underage girls in if they're wearing short enough skirts on a Saturday night. Makes you sick. Grrrr.

It was infuriating! I'm sure they've let in loads of people who really were under age to far more unsuitable films.
It's their assumption that he was lying that I find really insulting.

He was quite calm about the whole thing bless him - I was far more upset by it all. It's pretty insulting that they assumed he was lying.

That's just plain bloody nuts! I'm really gutted for them both :(
I know she looks young, but no offence to your lovely man, it's perfectly obvious she's not going to be tall, and he was there!!!

It's ridiculous! I know it's hard to judge age sometimes and I expect they get kids trying to sneak into older-rated films all the time, but they've really lost it if they think they can treat responsible adults like that. It's pretty damned insulting, IMO.

I'd definitely make a complaint to the cinema, and demand a refund of the wasted tickets. And what a shame he missed it :-( I'd be gutted too - I love Rush.

They did get a refund at the time, but it's the implication that he was lying that really irritates me. It's downright insulting to have that little respect for your customers.

There's not much they can do to fix things now that the film isn't showing any more, but a written apology is definitely in order.

At least the film is coming out on dvd soon (F wants to get it for him for Father's Day).
