mysteriousaliways: (Elevation Bono leans on Edge by Echo)
Ever since he was a teenager The Husband has been a huge fan of Ian Hunter, from his Mott The Hoople days through to his solo career.

Tonight we (and the kids) were on the VIP list for Ian's Newcastle gig, and as I type this Alan is back at the band's hotel (the Hilton) with them at an impromptu post-gig party. I don't think he can believe his luck :)

At a works barbeque a few years ago down in London to celebrate the completion of a project, Alan was talking to a colleague, Kirstie, who remarked on his Ian Hunter t-shirt - said colleague turned out to be the sister of Ian's drummer, Steve Holley. Kirstie, bless her, got in touch with Steve and asked him to get some tickets for us the next time they played in Newcastle.

Steve, who comes across as a lovely bloke, kept in touch over the years and has added us to the guest list for several gigs, although we've only had the chance to meet him once before tonight. After tonight's gig we were hanging around wondering if we could track Steve down to say thanks when we were pounced on by his girlfriend Marie-Claire (although how she knew it was us I've no idea - maybe it was the presence of the kids *g*) who said Steve was keen to meet us and dragged us all over the theatre trying to track him down :) We finally met up and chatted away for a while (he was very charming - kissed the girls' hands) and invited us all back to the hotel with the rest of the band for a party. Unfortunately with it being a school night I felt obliged to take the girls home, as they were still packing up and it was getting pretty late, but I convinced Alan to stay with them (he can get a taxi home) and do a bit of socialising. Last I saw of him, he was heading backstage with Steve and Marie-Claire, looking as if all his birthdays had come at once - quite appropriate really, as now that it's after midnight it really is his birthday. A pretty good celebration in his book, I expect :)

Edit: Alan has just arrived home - sadly he didn't get to meet Ian, who headed off straight after the gig due to a sore throat - but had a great time hanging out with the rest of the band and hearing all their anecdotes.

(I wouldn't have minded hanging out with some rock stars for a bit longer, but duty called - maybe next time! I'm really pleased for Alan though.)
